Obsidian R1 - Roof Rack for 3rd Gen Subaru Outbacks (2005-2009)

Yep it's back, the first and only flat top roof rack made for 3rd gen Subaru Outbacks. Made from all aluminum and designed from the ground up, the R1 Roof Rack is a safe and secure way to transport whatever it is you need, from lumber and building supplies to camping and overlanding gear! I have had mine on my 2006 Outback (the green one) for nearly 2 years now and it hasn't budged an inch. It's carried roof top tents, hundreds of pounds of lumber, roof boxes, bikes, people, couches, mattresses dragged out of canyons and all sorts of random thing. 

LIMITED RUN? I will be capping this batch at 10, just so I can handle quantities and not have to deal with freight shipping. I am manufacturing and shipping these out of my VERY small 1 car garage. I just got laid off so don't have access to a freight bay anymore sadly... If anyone in the Portland area has access to one and is okay with me shipping stuff to it hmu! Excited to make a batch of these again.

Version 1.2 - I have some updates I will be making to the rack, mainly in the mounting sections. I will be using the same side rail design, but making adjustments to make the fit tighter and cleaner. I will also be adding options for the front wind protector. I have a few fun ideas, but to start will be offering a plastic version and a metal upgrade. I also want to make a stealth hidden light bar. Details later, but it will pop up and out of the wind screen! It will be available as an add on after, and will be coming at a later date TBD... 

Technical Specs:

• Side rails: 1/4in 5051 aluminum - black powder coated NOT painted. Super durable, ready for rugged adventure. 
• Rubber side guards to prevent scratching and reduce wind noise
• Cross bars - 1x2in aluminum t-slot - anodized black, compatible with anything that works with T-slot tracks like t-nuts and machine screws, drill your own holes, strap or clamp to the bars, whatever your hart desires. 
• Custom designed 3D printed mounting spacers, printed from ASA-CF to be extremely durable and strong. The original ASA mounts from gen1 haven't degraded at all, but I am upgrading to an ASA-CF for additional toughness and environmental protection. 
• Plastic or metal wind deflector - Plastic is made from 1/4in ASA and the metal ones will be 3/16in stainless or aluminum, tbd during production (see announcements blog for more info and updates) 
• Black oxide coated and stainless steel hardware to prevent rust
• 250lbs dynamic weight capacity and 500lbs static weight capacity*
• Total rack weight: 38lbs - shipping weight 40lbs
• Includes 4mm hex allen wrench and 7/16th wrench for installation, beers not included 

Fitment:  2005-2009 Subaru Outback (third gen) with stock roof rack. Please note you will need to remove your original cross bars in order to install the R1. The R1 is designed to attach to your OEM side rails, and replace your existing cross bars. There are 4 hard mounted cross bars as well as 2 floating cross bars. If you have a sunroof, the front bar will be a 1x1 instead of the normal 1x2. The bulk of your weight should be mounted to the 8 inner hard mounted cross bars. This rack does not fit the Subaru Legacy without roof rails, but may be compatible in the future.

• Stealth 40in light bar built into wind deflector - currently a work in progress using a standard size 40in light bar. Should be compatible with multiple brands, will have option for bring your own lightbar.
  • UPDATE 4/13/26 - I am partnering with AUXBeam to supply 40in light bars, or multiple light pods for the lighting!
• Colored hardware for additional personality, bronze or purple bolts or something fun if you want the flare. 
• Customized wind deflector designs, maybe possible this batch DM me with ideas on Instagram @obsidian.overland, metal ones will have an obsidian logo cut into them and powder coated black to match the rack.
• Rear or side ladder attachment (no promises)
• Handle attachments (currently compatible with 3rd party handles)
  
• Light bar quick mounts and wire channels

Please note that this is a PRE-ORDER, and will be shipping ~2 months after being placed, depending on how quick they sell. This is not a guaranteed date and there may be delays. If there are, I will be transparent and contact all pre-orders to disclose new dates. Product specifications may change slightly while things are ironed out. *WEIGHT RATING DISCLOSURE - THIS IS AN UNOFFICIAL RATING CALCULATED OFF THE STOCK SIDE RAILS. I have had well over 500lbs on this rack and it hasn't budged a milimeter, but since I don't have access to official testing this rating remains an estimate. If you have concerns about the strength, please reach out with any questions and I'm happy to answer everything.
